2D Paper Design

  Description: To start this lesson we talked about different habitats and started by sketching a couple different habitats that we thought of. After that, we wrote a description of our habitats. I chose to do the ocean. One of the requirements while we were layering the construction paper was that we must have a least 3 different media. The blue is the background the pink is the sand, purple is the coral, and orange is the fish. Extension Activity: This could be a great introduction or integration to a science lesson about biomes. Students could dive deeper into research. Even having the students just think about the habitats and have a discussion. You could also expand on the writing portion of this assignment and have the students extend their writing.

Printmaking

  Description: During this project, we talked about the four different seasons and we picked a season out of a hat. I drew fall so we talked about things that make up fall and I drew a football, leaves, a tree, and a pumpkin. First, we made our sketch on paper and then we transferred it to this thin styrofoam paper. We were then shown how to do printmaking with this and we rolled it into ink and then onto a piece of construction paper. Extension Activity: A simple extension for this would be to split it up during different seasons make each season and then put them together at the end of the year.

Weaving

  Description: This was for the lesson for crafts and we wove cups that we can use for different ideas that we came up with. To make this project we cut slits into the up and started weaving on the inside and out. We could use one or two colors but we had to explain why we chose those colors. Purple and yellow for the my high school colors. Extension Activity: Another way you could extend weaving into the classroom is by having the students weave bookmarks. These can be used for their independent reading books.

Drawing

  Description: We focused on warm and cool colors during this activity and also looked at night and day. We started by drawing two rough sketches of night and two sketches of day. Then on our big piece of paper, we split it in half and put a sun on one side and a moon on the other. The rest was up to us, we could use one of our sketches and draw it on the big piece. Then we used warm colors like yellow, red, and orange on the day side, and we used cool colors like blue and purple for the night side.  Extension Activity: An extension activity that could come out of this could be a science lesson that focuses on diving into desserts and how they can be blazing hot during the day but super cool during the night. This could be integrated into the talk about different habitats and weather.

Clay- Apple Pinch Pots

  Description: This was an activity where we used clay. We first went over ways to handle the clay and they show us each step before having use do it for our own. We pinched and rotates the sides to create the pot shape and then we used the techniques like scoring to apply the leaf and stem. We then painted over the whole pot. Extension Activity: A couple of simple discussion questions could be talked about after the project with a partner or small group. Did you like working with clay? What are some tools or techniques you used? What are you going to use your apple pot for or what could it be used for?

3D Design Paper

  Description: For this activity, we learned about Jean Dubuffet and the sculptures that he made. Then we used construction paper and drew shapes with Sharpies. We cut out the pieces and colored them, some Dubuffet style and some our own style. Then you cut little slits into the paper and put them together to make a paper sculpture. Extension Activity: A different idea that I thought of would be to have the students use construction paper and cut slits into them to link them together. On the construction paper can be whatever they want. 

Watercolor Music Painting

  Description: This is the project that Bryce Peterson and I taught. We started by showing the class different watercolor painting techniques and had them do it along with us (top picture). The techniques included gradient wash, crayon resist, blotting, flat wash, sgraffito, and wet on wet. After going through the techniques we read The Noisy Paintbox by Barb Rosenstock. This book shows that different music can inspire art and the movements of art. For the final project, we played four different songs while the students used at least two different techniques to paint how they thought the music made them feel or think.  Extension Activity: An extension to this activity would be to have the students find their own song that would be a good example to use for emotion painting. They could write a little explanation as to why they picked the song and the emotions that the song makes them feel. Could also have them create a painting of the emotions.
