Watercolor Music Painting

Description: This is the project that Bryce Peterson and I taught. We started by showing the class different watercolor painting techniques and had them do it along with us (top picture). The techniques included gradient wash, crayon resist, blotting, flat wash, sgraffito, and wet on wet. After going through the techniques we read The Noisy Paintbox by Barb Rosenstock. This book shows that different music can inspire art and the movements of art. For the final project, we played four different songs while the students used at least two different techniques to paint how they thought the music made them feel or think.

Extension Activity: An extension to this activity would be to have the students find their own song that would be a good example to use for emotion painting. They could write a little explanation as to why they picked the song and the emotions that the song makes them feel. Could also have them create a painting of the emotions.
